Ewa Beach Marriage License Application Process

To get a marriage license in Hawaii, both people must appear in person before a licensed marriage agent. No proxy applications are allowed. The Hawaii Department of Health handles all marriage licenses through its Vital Records office. For Ewa Beach residents, that means a trip to the Honolulu office at 1250 Punchbowl Street, Room 101.

The best way to apply is through the Electronic Marriage Registration System (EMRS). Fill out the form online, pay, and then both applicants show up at the Punchbowl Street office to finish the process. The online fee is $65, which is the $60 base fee plus a $5 portal charge. You can also walk in and apply without doing the online form first, though using EMRS saves time at the counter. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Passports, driver's licenses, and state IDs all work.

Hawaii has no waiting period. Your license is valid for 30 days from the date of issue and works anywhere in the state. You don't have to get married on Oahu just because you got the license here.

After the ceremony, the officiant files the completed license with the state. Once recorded, you can get certified copies through the Hawaii Vital Records online portal. The fee is $10 for the first copy and $4 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. A $2.50 portal fee applies to online orders.

You can also pick up certified copies in person at the Honolulu office on Punchbowl Street. This is faster than ordering by mail if you need the document quickly for a name change or passport application. Mail orders take 6 to 8 weeks. The DOH Vital Records page has full instructions and a list of who is eligible to request a copy. Not everyone can get one. Eligible requesters include the people named on the record, their parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, and siblings, as well as legal representatives.

Historical Marriage Records from the Ewa District

Ewa Beach sits within the historic Ewa district of Oahu. This district has its own identity in the state archives, and researchers looking for older marriage records should know that records were often indexed by district rather than by individual city or town. The Hawaii State Archives holds Records of Issue of License to Marry and Marriage Licenses from the Ewa district, with some records dating back to 1913 through 1927.

The Ulukau Hawaiian Electronic Library has digitized Oahu marriage indexes that include entries from the Ewa district. These are free to search and useful for genealogy research. You can look up names, dates, and sometimes find names of officiants or witnesses. The indexes cover the earlier period before statewide centralization. For records after 1929, the path goes through the Hawaii State Vital Records system.

The Hawaii State Archives at 364 South King Street in Honolulu is the main repository for original historical records. The archives are open Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm. Staff can help with research questions, and you can visit in person to work through the physical indexes. The Hawaii Digital Archives has some materials online, which can save you the trip if what you need has been digitized.

Hawaii Marriage Law Requirements

Hawaii marriage law falls under HRS Chapter 572. The legal age to marry without court approval is 18. No blood test is required. There is no waiting period. The ceremony must happen within 30 days of the license issue date. The person who performs your ceremony must be registered with the Hawaii DOH or hold a valid civil authority such as a judge.

Hawaii has no residency requirement for marriage. Couples from anywhere in the world can get a license and marry in the state. This makes it a popular destination for weddings, and the Ewa Beach area on Oahu's southwestern coast sees its share of wedding ceremonies. Confirm that your officiant is registered before the ceremony date.

For people who need legal help with marriage-related matters, the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii has a resource for requesting vital records copies. The full statute text is at Justia's HRS Chapter 572 page. The DOH marriage licenses page is the official state resource for license requirements and applications.
